Smart lock installation

Fitting is quoted on the phone once we know the door and the model, and it is a booked job rather than an emergency one. We check the door before recommending hardware, because the most common smart lock problem is a good lock on a door that was never right for it.

Before you call, have this ready

  • The address, or the nearest intersection if you are on a rural route.
  • What the door or vehicle is. Year, make, and model for a car.
  • Whether anyone is inside, and whether you are somewhere safe.
  • Photo identification, and something showing you belong there.

A smart lock is still a deadbolt. Everything that makes an ordinary deadbolt work well or badly, the backset, the door thickness, whether the bolt lands cleanly in the strike, applies exactly the same. What the electronics add is convenience and a record of who came in, not strength.

That is why we look at the door first. A keypad lock on a door that has dropped, or where the bolt is already binding against the strike, will fail more often than the mechanical lock it replaced, because a motor has less force than your wrist does. Half of a good smart lock installation is making the door right.

What is included

What you actually get

  • The door assessed before hardware is chosen

Thickness, backset, bore, and how the bolt currently meets the strike. Five minutes here prevents the most common cause of smart lock complaints.

  • Fitting and alignment

The lock installed and the strike adjusted so the bolt throws fully without being driven. A motor should never be fighting the frame.

  • Setup and handover

Codes set, app paired if the model uses one, and the auto-lock and access settings configured with you rather than left on defaults.

  • Keyed backup where the model has one

Most keypad deadbolts still take a key. That cylinder gets keyed to your existing key where possible, so the backup is not a key you never carry.

  • Retrofit onto older doors

Doors in Durand, Dundas, and Brantford's older streets often need preparation work first. We will tell you honestly when that is more work than the lock is worth.

  • Replacing a failed smart lock

Including the ones fitted badly by someone else, which is a job we see regularly.

When you need this

The situations this covers

  • People keep needing a key you do not want to cut

Cleaners, dog walkers, family, and trades. Codes can be issued and removed without anybody driving across town.

  • You are renting out a property short term

Per-guest codes that expire remove the key handover problem entirely.

  • There is a key hidden outside

If there is a key under a mat, a rock, or on a ledge, the lock on that door is currently decorative.

  • A builder deadbolt has never been rekeyed

A smart lock replacing it solves two problems at once, since every key from the build stops mattering.

  • You want a record of who came in and when

Useful for a rental, a home office, or a house with teenagers, and worth being honest with the household about.

Straight answers

Questions people ask before they call

Will a smart lock fit my door?

Most standard doors take one, but it depends on thickness, backset, and how the existing hardware was cut. Older doors are the usual exception. We check before recommending a model, rather than after you have bought one.

What happens if the batteries die?

Almost every keypad deadbolt warns you well in advance, and most keep a keyed cylinder or an external contact so the door still opens. We set the keyed backup to a key you actually carry, which is the part people miss.

Are smart locks less secure than ordinary deadbolts?

Not inherently. The bolt, the strike, and the frame do the security work in both cases. A well-fitted smart lock on a reinforced strike is stronger than a poorly fitted mechanical deadbolt on a plain one.

Can I keep using a key as well as a code?

On most models, yes, and we can usually key that cylinder to match your existing house key so you are not carrying an extra one.

Do you supply the lock or should I buy it?

Either. If you have already bought one, we will fit it, provided it suits the door. If you have not, we would rather look at the door first and then recommend, because that order round produces far fewer problems.

Can you fit one on a condo or apartment door?

Often, but many buildings have rules about suite door hardware and some require the original cylinder to remain. Mention the building when you call and we will check that before anything is ordered.
